My Near Death Experience {of sorts}

Since the bf worked the graveyard shift before we left for Las Vegas, I ended up driving the entire way there. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to get a lot of rest on the road so when we checked into our hotel the bf took a nap {this is when I went out shopping}. We hadn't eaten since Chick-fil-A and I was STARVING so I stopped off at the grocery store on the way back to the hotel and grabbed a bag of Doritos {so healthy I know}. When I got back to the hotel, I was sitting in the living room area watching Ocean's 13 and reading Mating Rituals of the North American Wasp {which Kate was kind enough to loan out to me}. I started snacking on my bag of chips and before I knew it, I had inhaled a piece and it was lodged in my throat! Oh.my.god...it was such a scary moment. I could still breathe, but at the same time, I could feel the chip stuck somewhere in my esophagus. The bf woke up when he heard me panicking and running around like a crazy woman. Luckily, the chip started moving and a little water helped it become unstuck.

I know this event may seem silly, and the bf and I joked about it later, but it's actually quite serious. It made me realize I need to know how to give myself the Heimlich Maneuver and you should all know how to as well in case you are in a similar, scary situation {click the link to read how}!

And I am NEVER eating Doritos again.

Have any of you ever had a scary experience like this?

good LORD I almost choke on just about every other meal. I need to learn to do the Heimlich maneuver on myself too.

If you learn, lemme know what to do. Right now I just freak out my friends.

No, but i had to do the Heimlich on my mom once, & that was scary.

For the record - when you do it on someone else, it often doesn't feel like you're doing anything. I didn't feel i'd done anything, but she could feel the air push the stuff up & out.

You do it over the back of a chair to do it on yourself. Just below the rib cage. (Don't want to break ribs unnecessarily.)

Glad you're ok. Vegas is a dangerous place! LOL

Oh goodness! even in your most dire moment...you describe it with humor! (I have to admit, after reading you are doing fine, I had to laugh...with you, not at you :o)

This happens to me, when I take too big a bit and don't chew... which was not too long ago at the Mexican restaurant...with a tortilla! I tried very hard not to draw attention to the fact, cuz I find I have done this way too many times! haha

hubby: are you ok?
me: oh, yes...it's, *ahem*, cough, cough... nothing...

(our 2nd daughter, home for a very brief school break, mentioned that President Bush choked on a pretzel... so, we are in good company :o)

How terrible! So glad you got that thing out! Oh and the photo of the guy giving himself the Heimlich with an office chair definitely made me giggle!

Glad you are okay! I am sure that was scary.

That is completely frightening and I'm so glad you're okay! Did you cut your throat at all?

When I was twelve I choked on a butterscotch candy and actually blacked out. I grabbed someone's soda to try to wash it down and the soda came right back out because it had nowhere to go. I would have been embarrassed if it were not for the fact that I almost died. Luckily one of my friends grabbed a lunch attendant who administered the heimlich. It was HORRIBLE! My esophogas was bruised for about a week. Ouch!

Yes, it happened and still does happen to me. I'll swallow something fast and meaty usually. I asked the Dr. about it and he told me this is quite common in women as we age! Talk about adding insult to injury! He told me as long as you can breathe do not panic but he said if it gets bad enough sometimes they have to go in and remove it! And darn if that didn't happen to my friend's mother recently. He also said to drink something before eating to lube up the esophagus. I know... TMI but it was helpful info. That would not get me to give up Doritos however :)

I had the same experience, only with and M&M. I know exactly how you felt. I was alone so I was running around, freaking out, and not thinking to take a drink of water. thank goodness the chocolate melted or something and I lived! After my m&m attack I laid on the floor, hot and sweaty for probably an hour!

Glad you are safe!

Yikes! So glad you're OK and the Dorito piece dislodged itself. My husband is CPR certified (has to be for work) but I have absolutely ZERO clue!!

I got a Jolly Rancher stuck in my throat once...I was home ALONE. It was the worst minute of my life. EVER.

Glad you are okay. very scary indeed. I no longer eat apple jacks b/c while eating them I cracked a molar which required a crown!

At my 1st birthday party someone gave me a dorito and I choked on it too! I obviously don't remember this experience, but my parents sure do. My grandpa had to give me the baby version (where they smack you on the back) and apparently I turned blue. Yikes.

Omigosh, this is so scary! Also when you don't chew it enough, it slides down your throat and it feels like it's slicey your throat in half - OUCH!!

Im glad you are ok!

The last time that happened to me, I ended up with that annoying stuck in my throat feeling - like it actually punctured my esophagus or something. About 30 minutes later, the pain was gone, but it certainly was scary when it happened!

Happy it was nothing more serious!

Oh my gosh...I'm glad you're okay. I choked once on something (can't remember what). I was home alone and kinda freaked out.

That is scary! I’m glad you were okay. I have a fear of choking when I am by myself and should probably learn how to give myself the Heimlich.

I actually almost choked on a dorito once too. I think it has something to do with the triangular shape.

I would have been so scared, too! One time a friend of mine nearly choked on a piece of lettuce, and someone else at our table gave her the heimlich maneuver. I felt so bad b/c I totally froze, but I vowed to make sure I learned how to do this!

That is super scary! I'm glad you're okay!

It makes me think of that 30 Rock episode where Liz talks about choking and being alone. And then it happened to her...of course :)

Oh my goodness, so scary!!! I am so glad to hear that you are okay!

What does your bf do that he has to work graveyard shifts?

Kate said...

How scary! I am sorry the Wasp book brought you bad luck ;)

I can (theoretically) do the Heimlich Maneuver on myself (granted there is a chair or something similar nearby). Speaking of, I need to update my CPR certification!
