You may remember that I joined the gym [which I will refer to as *large chain gym*] at the beginning of 2010. There are two within the same general vicinity as my house and work. I have been driving about 7 miles one way, after work, to go to the nicer of the two gyms. On the weekend and nights I don't feel like driving, I go to the less nice gym closer to my house, about 5 miles one way.
So imagine my delight when *large chain gym* decided to open a new gym right smack between my house and work...literally! I have been patiently waiting months and months for this gym to open [seriously, it's encountered every single delay imaginable] and it finally has!
I was so excited to check it out last night and it really is spectacular. The cardio machines are awesome, the workout equipment is top-notch, the group exercise classes look promising, etc. etc...
BUT...and of course there is a but....
My current membership does not include access to the new gym! Apparently, there are four different levels of gym, and my membership only allows access to three of them. What??! Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy? I am so tired of additional fees, hidden taxes, upgrade charges, and whatever else companies can think of to make us pay even more!
I'm more than likely going to pay the extra $15 a month to have access to the "Super Sport" level, but I think it's absolutely ridiculous and honestly, I feel taken advantage of. When I signed up for my membership, I was automatically assigned the "Sport" level because that was what the gym closest to me is considered.
Now that there is a higher-level gym near me, I am going to be forced to pay the additional fees while new members probably get a really good deal to sign up. It makes no sense. If companies want to stay in business, you'd think they'd first look at accommodating their already existing customers instead of raising prices on them.
Ughhhhhh...I'm just so annoyed by this!
Am I alone in my way of thinking?
Am I overreacting?
Am I overreacting?

Ohhhhhh my gosh, I would be the same way. You totally aren't overreacting that is pretty ridiculous. BLAH!
I got so upset with Urban Active that I just cancelled my membership... I felt so free afterwards. A year later I weigh less than I did when I was going there. Find a new place or make them change your membership level for free!!
gyms blow. i hate them. terrible. awful. ruthless. get away with murder. remind me to tell you my story. it is too long for a comment.
ps - i heart you.
I feel you. I joined the Super Sport by my place in Glendale, and now that I want to go to the Ultra Sport near my area, I can't! Kills me. The ultra isn't even THAT much nicer than the super. It has tanning beds which I would NEVER use. Buy 30 Day Shred and tell 24 Hour Fitness what they can do with their membership!!! Write an angry letter!!! DO IT!
That is SOOOOO annoying and the #1 reason why I have not joined a gym. I am trying to get my workouts in other ways because I simply can't afford to be charged for everything. Just wait until you have kids. The daycare costs while you work out are just INSANE!!! What's the point you know? Sorry about this honey...I would call and talk to someone there, even if only to get your frustrations out :-)
That really bites. I would pay more for the location and the equipment. Yet, it is just sad that being a current member that you get bent over!
Uh no, not overreacting. That is ridiculous. Can you go to the join and use your charm, uh I mean talk to them...?
I've heard that there are places where if you ask they will give you the new member price. But I'm guessing it's something they try to keep quiet. Maybe somehow you'll be able to work something out?
oh my goshhh that is soo obnoxious!!! the urban actives by my house do not let you have universal membership to all of their gyms either. like COME ON...im paying a lot a month, the least you can do is provide me some convenience here!! ha good luck!
would be the same way.
